TINUBU MEETS G-5, IN LONDON
The governors, known as G-5 Governors are Governors Nyesom Wike of Rivers State, Samuel Ortom of Benue State, Seyi Makinde of Oyo State, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State and Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia State.
It was gathered that the APC presidential candidate and the five governors met on Wednesday at the London residence of the APC presidential candidate.
Tinubu's supporters included Jigawa State Governor Badaru Abubakar and former Ekiti State Governor John Kayode Fayemi.
According to the source, all other people present at Tinubu's residence were excused before the meeting began.
We have agreed to work together with the G5; the agreement rhythm with our desire to forge together a government of national unity.
“When the history of this political epoch is written, the names of Wike, Ortom, Makinde, Ugwuanyi and Ikpeazu will be written in gold for the courageous decision to place national interest above all other considerations,” a source told Daily Trust.
He also said that the governors were to remain in PDP and work for the actualisation of Tinubu’s presidency which would come with “several offers and benefits” while the governors were free to still pursue their other political interests.
Another source close to a sitting governor confirmed the meeting but added that they were still fine-tuning the modalities of the alliance for the benefit of all parties.
Meanwhile, Akin Osuntokun, the newly appointed Director-General of the Labour Party Presidential Campaign Council, stated that he would be happy if the five disgruntled governors on the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) platform eventually support his principal, Peter Obi, ahead of the 2023 presidential election.
The five governors are at the centre of the PDP's crisis. They have been calling for the resignation of the PDP national chairman, Iyorchia Ayu, since former Vice President Atiku Abubakar emerged as their party's flag bearer.
Since they had yet to return to the country, the five PDP governors were unavailable for comment last night. Wike recently ruled out backing Atiku, saying he would make his presidential candidate known to the public next month.
The governors have been deliberating between Tinubu and the Labour Party's (LP) Presidential Candidate, Peter Obi.
However, it was yet certain whether all five governors would ultimately support Tinubu due to the peculiarities of their stake in the political machinations.
Ologunagba disclosed that everything was still in the realm of speculation but if anything untoward happens, the PDP is a “party that deals with rules and laws, we have our organs and processes and we follow our rules. The party takes action after due consideration of all the issues.
So when those things happen, the constitution of the party will deal with them. We are a party that is very organised, united and concerned about the elections and Nigerian people, but that does not mean that if anybody, no matter how highly placed, goes contrary to the provision of the constitution of the party, the constitution will not kick in.”

YOUR CHRISTMAS MESSAGE UNGODLY ..APC
GOV ORTOM ENDORSES PETER OBI
Ortom said Obi is the best person that can help deliver Nigeria from its challenges,
He spoke while commending Obi for visiting camps of the Internally Displaced People, IDPs, in the State on Christmas day.
Speaking in Makurdi, the governor prayed that God would bless Obi’s presidential ambition.
According to Ortom: “Several presidential candidates have come here, and none of them have chosen to visit those IDPs camps and look at their plight to see how they are doing and give them hope that when they win, they will bring them succour, help, and hope.
For you to have chosen to visit the IDPs on a Christmas day that you should be celebrating with your family, for me as a Christian, I say God will bless you and your aspirations. My prayer is that God will bless your aspiration to be the president of this country.
“Because I have seen capacity, faith, and hope, and I have seen someone who can bring the required equity, justice, and fairness that I have been pursuing since I became governor in 2015. If I were not in PDP, I would have been following you all over the place to canvass and vote for you
But, because I’m in PDP, I’m telling Nigerians that this man can help deliver this country from its challenges.”

2023: I'LL WIN PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION BUT WONT UNDERRATED ATIKU, OBI, KWANKWASO – TINUBU
He however expressed optimism that he will emerge victorious at the end of the exercise because he is the best among all those who have indicated interest in succeeding President Muhammadu Buhari in 2023.
We take everybody seriously. Every co-contestant be it Atiku, Obi or Kwankwaso is a serious contender. So, we take all the 18 presidential candidates seriously and we won’t underrate anyone of them”.
“However, we are confident of our chances that Asiwaju Bola Tinubu is the best among them and will emerge the winner at the end of the exercise”
“Asiwaju Tinubu is a wealth creator. He is an expert in wealth creation and what the country badly needs now is wealth creation. He is someone who turned around the fortune of Lagos and the revenue of the State during his time as governor”.

YOU REMAIN EXPELLED FROM PDP, CAN'T SPEAK FOR US,’ WIKE REPLIES SECONDUS
Secondus had in a chat with journalists during the week said no individual has the power to impose any presidential candidate on the people of Rivers State.
He was reacting to the governor’s promise to reveal his adopted presidential candidate in January.
Wike was instrumental to Secondus exit as PDP’s national chairman in 2020.
The governor, who helped the Rivers State-born politician to become the PDP chairman in December 2017, accused Secondus of drawing the party backward throughout his three years’ tenure as the party helmsman.
In his address at the inauguration of projects at Aluu-Omagwa in Omagwa, Ikwerre local government area of the state on Saturday, Wike insisted that Secondus remains expelled from the PDP and therefore cannot speak or interfere in the party’s affairs.
He said: “A former member of our party, Uche Secondus, said no one man can impose a presidential candidate on Rivers people. He is not a member of our party. His ward (in Andoni, Rivers) expelled him from the party. The court confirmed it.
He went to the Court of Appeal and lost. He went to Supreme Court, the matter is coming up on October 23, 2023. I told him, you will not be the national chairman to conduct the convention. Did he conduct it? Was he at the national convention?
“Up until now, you are not a member of our party. And in any case, I never said I was going to impose my candidate on Rivers people. I said I was going to tell Rivers people who I am going to support, and who I am going to campaign for. But don’t blame them, when you didn’t finish secondary school, you will not understand the grammar.
“So, Mr. Secondus, I have no problem with you being a technical adviser to Atiku. But don’t speak on behalf of the PDP in Rivers State because you are not a member of our party.

TINUBU, ATIKU SPOKESMEN FAULT OBI ON RESIGNATION CALL
Obi had said at his presidential rally in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State that weak and ageing presidential candidates should have no business running for an important office like the presidency.
According to him, he could not imagine being represented by anyone at a rally that has something to do with his mission to render service.
He further emphasised that the task of rescuing Nigeria from total collapse requires the physical energy of a vibrant candidate who can get the job done seamlessly.
He added, “He should use this period to apologise to his followers and Nigerians for not ‘verifying’ the character of his campaign DG or performing any form of due diligence before appointing the same person to market his credentials as well as his anti-corruption stance.”
The spokesman for Tinubu-Shettima presidential campaign council, Festus Keyamo, also carpeted the former Anambra State governor, saying he is showing a sign of desperation.

BREAKING: OKUPE RESIGNS AS DG OF LP PRESIDENTIAL CAMPAIGN
Doyin Okupe has stepped down from his position as the director-general of the Labour Party presidential campaign council.
He announced his resignation in a letter addressed to Peter Obi, LP presidential candidate, and dated December 20, 2022.
Okupe’s resignation comes hours after he was convicted over money laundering charges.
HOW MONEY DESTROYS OUR ELECTIONS – INEC
Yakubu raised this concern at a “Stakeholders’ Summit on Addressing the Influence of Money in the 2023 General Elections” held in Abuja on Monday.
The INEC boss said, “It renders the emergence of the right candidates for positions extremely difficult, undermines fair electoral adjudication, and destroys the professional and independent conduct of INEC officials and other public agencies involved in elections.
“Even more worrisome is the high prospect that criminal money may find its way into our elections through money laundering. Above all, the pernicious use of money tremendously increases the likelihood of election violence due to a ‘win at all costs’ mentality among contestants, who would have invested a fortune in election.
Surely, election is not a business venture for profit. Instead, it is an application to serve the people with the understanding that they may prefer someone else on one occasion. But then, there would be an opportunity to reapply after four years. Citizens’ choices must never be subverted by the negative use of money,” he said.
Meanwhile, ahead of next year’s general election, the 18 registered political parties in Nigeria have called out the state governors, accusing them of trying to sabotage the electoral process by stifling the opposition in their various states.
Also, a rights lawyer, Mr Femi Falana, SAN, asked security agencies to arrest and prosecute those he claimed are “anti-democratic forces” bent on truncating the 2023 elections.
This came as INEC, security and anti-graft agencies decried the high cost of politics in Nigeria and the ruinous influence of money on the nation’s democracy.
Some of the stakeholders at the event were the INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu; Inspector-General of Police, IGP, Usman Baba Alkali; Chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission, ICPC, Professor Bolaji Owasanoye, SAN; and Chairman, Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Mr. Abdulrasheed Bawa

PDP CRISIS TO BE OVER SOON – ORTOM
The Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom, has given strong indications that Peoples Democratic Party, (PDP), would soon resolve the lingering crisis bedevilling it at the national level.

He expressed happiness that the PDP governorship candidate and Speaker of the State Assembly, Mr. Titus Uba who has been ill for some time was recuperating in a hospital outside the country assuring that he would surely be home in the first week of January for the campaigns.
“The Speaker who is our governorship candidate is well and in high spirits. He had wanted to come back home before Christmas but I advised him to stay behind and rest well before returning to the country because we are holding forth for him.
“And by the first week of January 2023, we will all move to the Makurdi toll gate to welcome him back home to Benue state.”
The governorship candidate who later addressed the stakeholders on phone thanked Governor Ortom and the Benue people for all the support and also for standing with him in prayers assuring that if elected governor in 2023 he would not disappoint the people.

BENZEMA ANNOUNCES END TO INTERNATIONAL CaYreer WITH FRANCE
Ballon d’Or winner Karim Benzema has announced his retirement from the France national team a day after his country lost the World Cup final against Argentina.
“I made the effort and the mistakes it took to be where I am today and I’m proud of it! I wrote my story and ours ends,” the 35-year-old Real Madrid Madrid Striker wrote on Twitter.
An injury had forced the reigning Ballon d’Or winner to withdraw from the World Cup ahead of France’s first match in Qatar. He scored 37 goals for France in 97 appearances.
The Real Madrid player, who won the Ballon d’Or award in October, had been desperate to feature in Qatar having not been selected when France won the World Cup in Russia four years ago.
He was frozen out of the France team for five and a half years because of his involvement in a blackmail scandal over a sextape involving his former teammate Mathieu Valbuena.
In a trial last year he was handed a one-year suspended prison sentence and fined 75,000 euros ($79,500).
For the Qatar World Cup, coach Didier Deschamps opted not to call up a replacement and France still had depth in their squad, particularly in an attack led by 23-year-old Kylian Mbappe.
Paris Saint-Germain forward Mbappe won the World Cup Golden Boot award with eight goals, including a hat-trick in Sunday’s penalty shootout defeat by Argentina following a 3-3 draw at the end of extra time.

QATAR 2022: MBAPPE, MESSI OTHERS WIN AWARDS AFTER WORLD CUP FINAL
SERAP TASKS BUHARI, EFCC TO NAME, SHAME POLITICIANS BUYING PVCs FROM POOR VOTERS
SERAP is also urging the president to “ensure that the politicians and their sponsors who are suspected to be involved in these grave electoral and human rights crimes are named and shamed, regardless of their political affiliations.”
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) recently alleged that some politicians were buying PVCs from poor Nigerians across the country. The Northern Elders Forum (NEF) had corroborated the allegations, reportedly stating that some politicians were buying PVCs with N2,000 in the north.
In the letter dated 17th December 2022 and signed by SERAP deputy director Kolawole Oluwadare, the organisation said: “Buying of PVCs from poor Nigerians is a threat to fair and representative elections, as it amounts to vote buying, undue influence and improper electoral influence.”
SERAP said, “The allegations that politicians and their sponsors are buying PVCs from poor Nigerians are grave violations of the Nigerian Constitution 1999 [as amended], the Electoral Act, and the country’s international anti-corruption and human rights obligations.”
The letter, read in part: “We would be grateful if the recommended measures are taken within 7 days of the receipt and/or publication of this letter. If we have not heard from you by then, SERAP shall consider appropriate legal actions to compel your government to comply with our request in the public interest.
“No body politic worthy of being called a democracy entrusts the selection of leaders to a process of auction or barter. Inducing poor Nigerians to sell their PVCs intrudes on their freedom to make up their own minds
The buying of PVCs from poor Nigerians and the resulting deprivation of the right to participation would completely compromise the legitimacy of representative government.
“Investigating, identifying, naming and shaming those suspected to be involved in these criminal acts of vote-buying and undue influence, and bringing them to justice would promote the people’s right to vote, and public trust and confidence in the electoral process
The Nigerian Constitution provides in Section 14(1)(c) that, ‘the participation by the people in their government shall be ensured in accordance with the provisions of this Constitution.’ Sections 121 and 127 of the Electoral Act prohibit electoral bribery and undue influence before, during and after any election.
“Similarly, the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights, and the African Charter on Democracy, Elections and Governance guarantee the right to political participation, including the right to vote.
“These human rights treaties also require states parties including Nigeria to promote the establishment of the necessary conditions to foster citizen participation.
“Buying of PVCs is a variation of vote buying and undue influence. It would undermine the ability of INEC to effectively discharge its responsibilities under Section 153 of the Nigerian Constitution and paragraph 15(a) of the third schedule of the Constitution, and the Electoral Act 2022.
“It would lead to disparate and discriminatory treatment of poor Nigerians, encourage poor governance, and weaken citizens’ capacity to hold their ‘elected officials’ accountable for their actions.
“When politicians and their sponsors decide to buy the support of the people rather than contest fairly for their votes, there are possibilities that such politicians will show a disregard for democratic rules and a disposition to adopt illegal means becomes inevitable.
Acting swiftly to address the brazen impunity and allegations of politicians purchasing PVCs from poor Nigerians would also send a strong message to politicians that your government would not tolerate any infringement of the electoral process ahead of the 2023 general elections.”

BUHARI WOOS INVESTORS IN US, SAYS NIGERIA IS AFRICA'S LARGEST CONSUMER MARKET
President Muhammadu Buhari has assured investors of massive investment opportunities in Nigeria.
Buhari spoke at a dialogue session with some US investors, Nigerian officials, diplomats and as well as experts from the private sector in Washington DC, United States of America, on Friday.
The session, titled ‘The Presidential Dialogue: Nigeria Business and Investment Forum’, was held on the sidelines of the 2022 US Africa Leaders Summit.
Buhari said apart from the population advantage and demographics, various incentives and policies implemented by the Nigerian government have made the country a preferred choice for investment.
“It is therefore imperative that I reiterate at the outset, the comparative advantages that exist within Nigeria’s economy,” he said.
“First as the most populous country and largest economy in Africa, there is no doubt that Nigeria remains Africa’s largest single consumer market, projected to account for over 15% of overall growth in Africa’s spending, by 2025.
“Secondly, investors in the country would have access to new markets under the African Continental Free Trade Area, (AfCTA), which would be the world’s largest free trade area.
It would be expected to connect 1.3 billion people across 55 countries and a consumer market that will be worth over 3 trillion dollars by 2030, and a combined Gross Domestic Product (GDP) valued at 3.4 trillion dollars.
“Since 2015, when my administration assumed office, fixing of the infrastructural gaps needed for business to thrive in Nigeria, namely; roads, railways, air and sea ports, energy and telecommunications, constituted greater priorities for government.”
He said the federal government is determined to improve the business environment through incentives, regulatory reform, and a business-friendly visa system.
Buhari said his government has made the energy sector a key priority, considering the need for adequate and sustainable electricity supply as a prerequisite for socio-economic and industrial development.
The president said Nigeria, like other countries, is facing economic challenges caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and the war in Ukraine as well as climate change.
He said in spite of the challenges, Nigeria witnessed seven consecutive quarters of growth, after the negative growth rates recorded in the second and third quarters of 2020.
YULETIDE: NSCDC TO DEPLOY PERSONNEL TO WORSHIP CENTRES
The Commandant General, Ahmed Audi, who made this known in a statement signed by the corps spokesperson, Olusola Odumosu, on Friday, affirmed that the Corps and other security agencies were ready to forestall any form of violence during the season.
The CG charged the zonal commanders and state commandants to expose criminals at their various hideouts and ensure the safety of lives and protection of public assets and infrastructure in their respective domains.
The CG also tasked state commands and all divisional offices in every local government area in the country to deploy effective operational teams for constant patrol of every nook and cranny, black spot, and flash point during this critical period when a crime is most prevalent.
He called on citizens and residents to be vigilant and promptly report suspicious movements or activities to security agencies for immediate action to nib crime in the bud.
TINUBU GETS SUPPORT, DONATES N35m FOR ORPHANAGE BUILDING
FIN president, Sheikh Muhammad-Arabi Ahmad Abdulfathi, announced the support for Tinubu/Shettima Presidential ticket during the group fundraising to cater for thousands of orphans who lost their parents in the various terrorist attacks across the country on Thursday at the National University Commission Hall, Abuja.
He said their support for Tinubu/Shettima ticket was not based on his religious affiliations, but competence as well as track records
According to him, Tinubu and his running-mate, Kashim Shettima who was the former governor of Borno State remained the best choice for Nigeria in 2023 and urged his members across the country to vote en masse for APC Presidential candidate in the general election.
Early APC Presidential candidate Bola Ahmed Tinubu who was the chief launcher and chairman of the special fundraising for the building of an orphanage and skills acquisition centre, donated the sum of N25 million to the project.
Mr Tinubu’s donation was announced by his running mate, Kashim Shettima who also donated the sum of N10m to the project.
Shettima, who represented his principal as the chairman of the fundraising, said the donation was not to secure the support of the pioneer Muslim group, but a sadaqatul jariyah (charity) that will not only benefit them in this life but after their death.
“Caring for orphans is a significant part of Islam, orphans are mentioned 52 times in the Holy Quar’an and Allah describes the righteous in Paradise as being those who took care of orphans during their worldly life, this encapsulate the importance of caring for orphans as the best investment for here and hereafter. It is not about the beautiful car, houses and power we acquired in this world,” Shettima said.
The Kaduna State APC governorship candidate, Senator Uba Sani, also donated N20m to the building of an orphanage and a skills acquisition centre to be named after the venerable Islamic leader, late Sheikh Ibrahim Inyass and will be situated in Zaria, Kaduna State

JUST IN: TINUBU's CAMPAIGN THREATENED AS FRESH CRISIS HITS APC
REAL REASON WHY TINUBU WAS RUSHED OFF STAGE IN MINNA
According to Onanuga, Tinubu made his speech brief in order “to attend to other programmes of the day”.
The APC PCC’s statement reads: “A massive crowd of APC supporters welcomed the presidential candidate, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to Minna on Wednesday, as he arrived for the mega rally.
“The cheering crowd was unprecedented, according to journalists at the Trade Fair Complex, venue of the rally.
“Tinubu, who held another successful rally in Kaduna on Tuesday, arrived in Minna in the evening of the same day for a series of meetings with APC leaders.
“The crowd was so huge that Tinubu spoke briefly to appreciate the supporters and identified the party candidates seeking elective positions.
“Contrary to the rumours that he was rushed off stage because of health concerns, Tinubu cut it short to attend to other programmes of the day.
He commended the party supporters for coming out en masse to witness the flag off of the presidential campaign.”
This newspaper reports that after the rally, Tinubu inaugurated his campaign office in the city.

I DON'T HAVE ISSUE WITH ATIKU DESPITE ELECTION MAR BUT AYU MUST GO...WIKE
He, however, maintained his stance that the only panacea to resolving the intractable crisis rocking the party is for the north to relinquish the position of the national chairman of the party to the south.
Speaking, yesterday, in Port Harcourt, when his political associates and Rivers elders, led by the Chairman, Rivers Elders Council, Chief Ferdinand Alabraba, visited his private residence in Rumueprikom to felicitate with him on his birthday, the governor insisted that the party Chairman, Iyorchia Ayu, must go.
The governor recalled that a year ago, Rivers Elders urged him to contest for the office of President of Nigeria. According to him, he heeded the advice and almost clinched the PDP presidential ticket but for the manipulation of the process.
He said: “I don’t regret I ran for presidency. In the name of God, I am happy to make Rivers State proud. I am happy as far I am concerned. If they had allowed it to be what it is supposed to be, I would have won the election. But it’s okay. It has happened.
People said because I lost election, it doesn’t matter. I didn’t lose election. This is my first time of trying to run for office of the president of Nigeria and we made impact. If it is easy, let them go ahead. Are they not the ones begging.”
He reiterated he did not have any personal problem with Atiku and explained that the lingering crisis in the PDP had to do with the demand from southern stakeholders that the national chairman, who hails from the north as the presidential candidate, should relinquish his position.

OMOYELE SOWORE ANNOUNCES MERGER OF AAC WITH PRP
The parties also presented Omoyele Sowore of the AAC as their joint presidential candidate.
The alliance was announced on Monday at a press conference in Abuja.
Mr Sowore represented the AAC, while the PRP faction was led by Abdulmajeed Dauda, with other members of the two parties.
Falalu Bello is listed on the website of INEC as the national chairman of the PRP while Kola Abiola, son of Moshood Abiola, is recognised as the party’s presidential candidate.
Speaking on the alliance, Mr Sowore said the alliance is between the authentic AAC and PRP, and it is aimed at rescuing Nigeria from the grip of the two major parties – the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
He added that while “we are not against Kola Abiola version of the PRP, we are in alliance with Aminu Kano PRP.
The other political parties are not different. What we know is that APC was formed by those who defected from the PDP,” he said.
On his part, Mr Dauda described the Falalu–led PRP as “reactionary forces” attempting to hijack the party and derail it from its leftist ideology.
He stated that they are still in court to “recover the party” from the people with neo-liberal ideology.
Mr Bello could not be reached for comments on the development.
WIKE BREAKS SILENCE OVER SENDING THUGS TO ATTACK ATIKU'S SUPPORTERS
The Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike has finally broken his silence over allegations levelled against him of sending thugs to attack supporters of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) flag bearer, Atiku Abubakar in the state.
The governor, who dispelled the claims that he was responsible for the attacks said the allegations were cheap blackmail.
Wike while speaking in Port Harcourt, the state capital noted that he has never been involved in any act of political violence.
The governor warned the political class against any attempt to cause chaos in the state.
Wike was speaking about the alleged attack days after the PDP campaign council chairman in the state Abiye Sekibo, accused Wike’s government of sending thugs to attack them.
In his reaction Wike said: “Some people are saying we sent thugs to attack them. You see, when people see failure, they will begin to plan excuses.

YOUR BULLYING PRESS ALLEGATION BASELESS – APC CAMPAIGN FIRES THISDAY/ARISE EDITORS
The All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Council (PCC) has replied to the editors of THISDAY/Arise Television over an allegation of attempting to silence free and fair journalism.
THISDay media group had accused the APC campaign of demanding the removal of Shaka Momodu, THISDAY editor, and Rufai Oseni, The Morning Show co-host, from their current positions.a
In a publication on Monday, the media group said the APC campaign accused it of blackmail after the APC flagbearer, Bola Tinubu, refused to honour an invitation to attend a town hall series organised by Arise TV.
Reacting in a statement on Monday night, the Directorate of the Media and Publicity of the APC Campaign berated the media group for accusing its leadership of trying to silence free and fair journalism.
In the statement issued by Bayo Onanuga and Dele Alake, the APC campaign said the accusation of attempting to bully the media is “baseless and stupid”
The campaign also alleged that THISDAY newspaper is notorious for publishing unfounded rumours masquerading as truth and asked the media group to stop blackmailing its standard bearer into attending its programmes.
The statement reads: “It is instructive that Obaigbena’s media group is isolated in making this frivolous allegation against the duo.

ATTACKS YOn INEC OFFICES IN IMO POLITICALLY CONTRIVED ’ –UZODIMMA
Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State has condemned the incessant attacks on offices of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in the state, describing them as “politically contrived”.
The governor made the comment at the Imo Police Command Headquarters in Owerri on Monday in the aftermath of an attack on the INEC headquarters in the South-East state which led to five deaths.
If we collaborate this with the events of the past, we have continuously said that what is happening in Imo State is politically contrived,” he said while addressing the press after the visit.
“Some people think that they can win the election yet they don’t want the election. How would they now win?”
With less than three months to the general election, Governor Uzodimma described the attacks as a distraction to the electoral body.
Three of the attackers were killed while two police officers died in the incident.
“The attack affected the part of the building occupied by the Election and Party Monitoring (EPM) Department and one official utility vehicle (a Toyota Hilux pickup van) were burnt,” INEC’s National Commissioner Festus Okoye said in a statement hours after the incident.
The response of the security and emergency services (the Fire Service) curtailed further damage to the building and other assets of the Commission. No critical election materials were destroyed. There were also no casualties involving staff of the Commission.
“This is the third attack on the Commission’s facilities in Imo State in less than two weeks following the earlier attacks on our Orlu LGA office on Thursday 1st December 2022 and Oru West LGA office on Sunday 4th December 2022.”
The incident, which happened as voters begin the collection of Permanent Voters’ Cards (PVCs) ahead of the 2023 general election, INEC said, is systematic.
2023:NIGERIA'S REVENUE CANNOT PAY DEBT – WORLD BANK
The new World Bank Lead Economist for Nigeria, Alex Sienaert, disclosed this in a presentation entitled, ‘Nigeria Public Finance Review: Fiscal Adjustment for Better and Sustainable Development Results.’
According to Sienaert, Nigeria’s debt servicing would gulp 100.2 per cent of Federal Government revenue by the end of 2022
This was a decline from the earlier projection in its October Africa’s Pulse report, which is a biannual analysis of the near-term macroeconomic outlook for the region, published during the World Bank/IMF Spring and Annual Meetings in April and October.
In the Africa’s Pulse report, the Washington-based bank had said that Nigeria’s debt service to revenue ratio could stand at 102.3 per cent by the end of 2022, describing the public debt in Nigeria as concerning due to the rising debt service-to-revenue ratio.
However, the situation would be dire in 2023 as debt surviving would exceed 118 per cent of revenue reported in the first four months of 2022.
In his presentation document, the World Bank lead economist for Nigeria noted that borrowing more money was not the solution for Nigeria.
The document read in part: “Borrowing more is not the solution: debt costs are rising rapidly, squeezing non-interest spending.
“Debt servicing has surged over the past decade and is expected to continue increasing over the medium-term, crowding out productive spending.”
It was recently reported that Nigeria’s public debt rose to N44.06tn in the third quarter of 2022, with the country struggling with a repayment burden as revenue draught persists.
According to a press statement published on the website of the Debt Management Office, the total public debt stock rose from N42.84tn recorded in the second quarter to N44.06tn in the third quarter of 2022.
This showed that there was a 2.85 per cent increase quarter-on-quarter, with Nigeria acquiring N1.22tn debt within three months
The bank further expressed concerns over the nation’s cost of debt servicing, which according to it, disrupted public investments and critical service delivery spending.
Speaking at the launch of the World Bank’s Nigeria Development Update titled, ‘The Urgency for Business Unusual,’ the Minister of Finance, Zainab Ahmed, had admitted that Nigeria was struggling to service its debt.
She said, “Already, we are struggling with being able to service debt because even though revenue is increasing, the expenditure has been increasing at a much higher rate, so it is a very difficult situation.”
A Professor of Development Macroeconomics at the University of Lagos, Prof Olufemi Saibu, criticised the government for over-borrowing.
He said, “I think we are over-borrowing. We continue to rely on international benchmarks which make us lazy in terms of revenue generation.”
The DMO said that the increase in public debt was due to new borrowings by the Federal Government to part-finance the deficit in the 2022 Appropriation Act, alongside new borrowings by sub-nationals.
It also noted that the total public debt stock consisted of domestic debt of N26.92tn and external debt of N17.15tn.
The World Bank recently said that Nigeria’s debt, which might be considered sustainable for now, was vulnerable and costly.
According to the Washington-based global financial institution, the country’s debt was also at risk of becoming unsustainable in the event of macro-fiscal shocks.
The bank had said, “Nigeria’s debt remains sustainable, albeit vulnerable and costly, especially due to large and growing financing from the Central Bank of Nigeria.
While currently the debt stock of 27 per cent of the Gross Domestic Product is considered sustainable, any macro-fiscal shock can push debt to unsustainable levels.
“However, the debt to the GDP in Nigeria is rising quickly, and the total stock of debt in absolute value has almost doubled between 2016 and 2020, and without a policy change is expected to reach 40 per cent of the GDP by 2025.”

Before now, the government had maintained that Nigeria’s fiscal challenge centred on revenue not debt, a position experts considered preposterous.

BUHARI TO APC: SIT TOGETHER, UNITE TO AVOID DEFEAT
According to a statement signed by Garba Shehu, Senior Special Assistant to the President (Media & Publicity) on Friday, the President spoke when he received Dr Dikko Radda, the governorship candidate of the APC and Faruk Lawal Jobe, the Running Mate at his residence.
President Buhari said party leaders need “to sit together,” to avoid divisions and ensure unity in order to avoid defeat at elections.
He said he received frequent reports on the ongoing campaigns in Katsina State and felt happy that so much hard work was being put into the exercise.
Once again, the President reiterated his determination to allow the reign of free, fair and credible elections in the country, adding that the outcomes in Anambra, Ekiti and Osun were testimonies of that resolution on his part.
He added that he felt honored by the visit and wished the party a very good outcome in the contests.
