NLC FUMES AS NNPC ADJUSTS FUEL PUMP PRICE

The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) on Wednesday fumed over the adjustment of pump prices by the Nigerian National Petrol Company Limited.

Barely 48 hours after President Bola Tinubu announced an end to the subsidy era during his inaugural speech at Eagle Square, Abuja on Monday, the NNPCL confirmed the hike in the pump price of Premium Motor Spirit also known as petrol.

Since the presidential pronouncement, fuel queues have resurfaced across the country as Nigerians forage for the premium product which was rose from around N185  per litre to between N400 and N600 per litre.

Worried by the situation, the NLC President, Joe Ajaero, issued a statement expressing worry that the national oil company would announce an increment.

Describing the development as unfortunate, Ajaero said the NNPCL’s action was coming on the heels of an ongoing meeting with stakeholders in the oil and gas sector to manage the unilateral but unfortunate announcement by the President.

“It is therefore unacceptable and we seriously condemn it. Good faith negotiation is key to reaching agreement. What the government has done is like holding a gun to the head of Nigerian people and bringing undue pressure on the leaders thus undermine the dialogue,” the NLC President said.

We call on the federal government to immediately instruct the NNPC to withdraw this vexatious Pricing template to allow free flow of discussions by the parties. Nigerians would not accept any manipulations of any kind from any of the parties especially from the representatives of the Government.

“Our commitment to this process is buoyed on the fact that all the parties would be committed to ensuring that it is carried out within the ambits of liberty without undue pressure. The release of that Template may not allow us to continue if nothing is done to withdraw it so that the dialogue can continue unhindered. It is clear that Government is actually trying to scuttle the process

NNPC CONFIRMS INCREASE IN PUMP PRICE OF PMS

The Nigerian National Petrol Company Limited has confirmed it adjusted pump prices of Premium Motor Spirit known better as petrol across the country.

In a statement issued on Wednesday and signed by its Chief Corporate Communications Officer, Garba Deen Muhammad, the national oil company explained that the adjusted pump price was in line with “current market realities”

Less than 24 hours after President Bola Tinubu declared an end to fuel subsidy, the pump price of petrol skyrocketed to N600 per litre from N195/l in many parts of the country.

The development equally triggered a 100 per cent hike in transport fares, while long queues resurfaced at fuel stations across Lagos, Abuja, Ilorin, Benin, Asaba, Port Harcourt, Kano, Makurdi and other major cities and urban areas.

Tinubu had in his inaugural address at the Eagle Square on Monday pronounced with finality an end to subsidy, noting that the 2023 Appropriation Act did not provide for petrol subsidy beyond June; the end of the 18-month extension period approved by the Muhammadu Buhari administration for the discontinuance of the subsidy regime.

SUBSIDY REMOVAL WONT TAKE IMMEDIATE EFFECT.. TINUBU

The Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Media Centre has explained the announcement of the removal of the fuel subsidy by President Bola Tinubu on Monday.

The Centre, in a statement, urged the public to relax panic-buying that has ensued as a result of his speech.

The statement explained the development is neither a new development nor an action of his new administration.

The Tweet reads: “The public is advised to note that President Bola Tinubu’s declaration that “subsidy is gone” is neither a new development nor an action of his new administration.

“He was merely communicating the status quo, considering that the previous administration’s budget for fuel subsidy was planned and approved to last for only the first half of the year.

“Effectively, this means that by the end of June, the Federal Government will be without funds to continue the subsidy regime, translating to its termination.

The panic-buying that has ensued as a result of the communication is needless; it will not take immediate effect.

“Furthermore, President Tinubu was clear about his plans to re-channel the funds previously devoted to the payment of subsidies into better investments that will cushion the effects of the removal on the general public, especially the poor of the poor. This includes but is not limited to investments in public infrastructure, education, healthcare and jobs that will materially improve the lives of millions of Nigerians and increase their earning potential.”

BREAKING: TINUBU APPOINTS DELE ALAKE PRESIDENTIAL SPOKESMAN

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed Mr Dele Alake as his spokesperson hours after he took oath of office on Monday.

Mr Alake is a long-time associate of Mr Tinubu. He served as his Commissioner of Information and Strategy from 1999 to 2007 while he was Lagos State governor.

The president also appointed Ambassador Kunle Adeleke as the State Chief of Protocol (SCOP) to the President.

The APC National Youth Leader Olusegun Dada was named as Special Assistant to the President on Digital Media.

The appointments add with immediate effect, it was learned.

ANXIETY AS TINUBU MAKES FIRST APPOINTMENTS

In line with tradition, President-elect Bola Tinubu is expected to make his first appointments after being sworn in as President tomorrow by the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Olukayode Ariwoola.

There are at least three appointments that ordinarily should be made by the new President to keep the wheel of government moving pending when other appointments that must have the seal of the National Assembly will follow.

The three appointments are the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Chief of Staff and presidential spokesperson.

There has been a jostle for appointments, including ministerial, under the Tinubu administration since the president-elect emerged after the February 25 presidential election.

Names have been mentioned as those being considered by Tinubu including those of very close associates but Sunday Vanguard was made to understand by sources close to the president-elect at the weekend that nothing was certain on appointments under the incoming administration including those that announced must, as a matter of tradition and necessity, be made tomorrow or Tuesday.

The president-elect, it was learnt from multiple sources close to him, yesterday, has kept allies and close associates, among others, guessing over those that will form his cabinet.

Kwara United Football Club on Wednesday defeated Nasarawa United by a lone goal at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, to qualify for the last eight of this year’s Federation Cup competition.

The lone goal, which ensured Kwara United defeated their North Central counterparts for the second time in three weeks, was scored by Samad Kadir, who converted a spot kick in the 52nd minute of the game.

Kwara United defeated Nasarawa United 1-0 in the Matcday 17 of the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) at the Township Stadium in Akure, to escape relegation from the apex league.

The team dedicated the victory to Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, in celebration of his emergence as the Chairman of the Nigeria Governor's Forum (NGF).

Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq yesterday emerged as the Chairman of the Forum which is in charge of coordinating the political and socio-economic activities of the 36 Governors, in relation to the activities of the Federal Government and inter-governmental duties.
The General Manager of the club, Bashir Badawiy, while commending the players for their commitment, thanked the Sports Commission, management, stakeholders, players, Supporters and Fans of the club for the feat, which he says, has eluded the team for a long time.

Nasarawa United showed early signs of seriousness when they forced a brilliant save off Kwara United Football Club goalkeeper, Adewale Adeyinka.

Kwara United took the initiative immediately, dictating the phase and wave of the game, forcing Nasarawa United to their own half, with the Lafia based team recording few ocassional incursions.

Kwara United Football Club introduced Ayobami Junior in place of Ahmed Jimoh, as Yahaya Ibrahim replaced Paul Samson, early in the second half, with the zeal to determine the knock-out game raised.

Yahaya Ibrahim's shot was blocked with a hand in Nasarawa United 's box, and the resultant penalty was converted by Samad Kadri, and the goal ended up been the decider of the Round of 16 match.

Samad Kadir almost made it two for the Harmony Boys few minutes later, and Omaka Anthony missed chances, as Harmony Boys dominated the game in the larger part of the game.

Kwara United defeated Gateway FC 4-2 on penalties in the Round of 64 of the competition, eliminated Ikorodu City 3-1 in the Round of 32, and yesterday, trashed Nasarawa United by a lone goal, to book a quarter-final ticket.

TINUBU UNFAIR TO ME FOR MEETING KWANKWASO IN PARIS, GANDUJE SAYS IN LEAKED AUDIO

The governor of Kano State, Abdullahi Ganduje, has expressed disaffection over a recent meeting between a former governor of the state, Rabiu Kwankwaso and President-elect Bola Tinubu.

The governor made the lamentation in a leaked audio, verified by insiders as the voices of Mr Ganduje and that of a former ‘placeholder’ vice presidential candidate of APC, Ibrahim Masari.

In 2018, Mr Ganduje was seen in leaked videos stuffing bundles of dollars in his gown, believed to be a bribe he allegedly collected from a contractor.

It would be recalled that Mr Tinubu recently met with the presidential candidate of the New Nigeria People’s Party, NNPP, in the 2023 general election as part of the former’s plan to form a “unity government”.

It was gathered that the president-elect, during the meeting extended a hand of fellowship to Mr Kwankwaso and expressed his desire to work with him.

Although sources said the leaders will hold subsequent meetings to finalise the deal, it was gathered that Mr Kwankwaso was offered a ministerial slot by the incoming president.

But in the leaked audio clip, Mr Ganduje was heard lamenting to Mr Masari that the president-elect was unfair to him for inviting Mr Kwankwaso to a meeting in Paris.

In the audio, Mr Masari was heard pacifying Mr Ganduje and urging him not to be angry over the development.

He asked the governor to remain calm until he visits Mr Tinubu on Thursday.

“There is noise all over Kano [over the Paris meeting],” Mr Ganduje said at the beginning of the conversation.

But Mr Masari, who is a close ally of Mr Tinubu, said he had earlier hinted to him [Ganduje] of the possibility of the meeting.

“I told you about it but you asked me to dismiss it,” Mr Masari said.

Even if it was true as you hinted, was there anything I could have done to prevent him? Nothing,” Mr Ganduje responded.

“You should have at least confronted him to confirm for yourself,” said Mr Masari.

If he [Tinubu] now sees Kwankwaso as an alternative to us because we lost election, there is no problem about that,” Mr Ganduje said in emotion-laden voice.

But Mr Masari asked the governor to perish the thoughts and be calm, adding that he cautioned Mr Tinubu about the implications of the meeting without notifying Ganduje.

“I share your pains. Even your enemy knows that he was not fair to you, but please remain calm until you come [to Abuja],” Mr Masari consoled Mr Ganduje.

“He should have at least invited us for the meeting even if it was for symbolic purposes. And we even lost Kano because of him, the governor lamented. And one thing he [Tinubu] failed to understand is that power belongs to God. And these are very wrong calculations”, he said.

Responding, the former placeholder VP candidate said Mr Tinubu was sending the wrong signal that would prevent people from trusting him.

Mr Ganduje cited an example of how Kwankwaso fell apart with former president Goodluck Jonathan over corruption allegations.

I spoke with Mr President earlier and I lamented to him about the issue. He (Tinubu) told me that it was SLS [Sanusi Lamido Sanusi] who arranged the meeting through [Gilbert] Chagoury (a Franco-Lebanese business tycoon and ally of Mr Tinubu). And I asked whether you were informed before the meeting, he (Tinubu) said no. I will adequately brief you when we meet, you know phone calls are not safe. Just keep exhibiting your maturity by keeping mum,” Mr Masari said.

MATAWALLE $2m BRIBE HOAX: EFCC WILL NOT BANDY WORDS WITH SUSPECT

The attention of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has been drawn to a trending interview granted to the Hausa Service of the British Broadcasting Corporation, BBC, by Bello Muhammed Matawalle governor of Zamfara State, where he allegedly made wild bribery allegations against the Executive Chairman of the Commission, Mr. Abdulrasheed Bawa.

Matawalle's recourse to mudslinging is symptomatic of a drowning man clutching at straws.

But despite the irritation of his phantom claims, the Commission will not be drawn into a mud fight with a suspect under its investigation for corruption and unconscionable pillage of the resources of his state.

If Matawalle will be taken seriously, he should go beyond sabre-rattling by spilling the beans - provide concrete evidence as proof of his allegations.

Again, the Commission wishes to alert the public about plans by some of the alleged corrupt politically exposed persons to flee the country ahead of May 29.

The Commission is working in close collaboration with its international partners to frustrate these escape plans, and bring those involved to justice

EFCC CHAIRMAN DEMANDS $2M BRIBE FROM ME, I HAVE EVIDENCE – MATAWALLE

The Governor of Zamfara State, Bello Matawalle, has accused the chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Abdulrasheed Bawa, of demanding $2million bribe from him.

In an interview with BBC Hausa Service monitored by our Correspondent, Governor Matawalle also said he has evidence against the EFCC boss, insisting that Bawa could not be trusted.

Recall that earlier on Wednesday, Matawalle called for Bawa’s resignation, saying he had questions to answer on alleged corruption

But, the EFCC chairman fired back on Thursday, saying he had nothing to hide and asked Matawalle to petition appropriate authorities if he had any evidence against him

“It is not just to always blame governors. It is not only governors who have treasury, the federal government also has. What does the EFCC boss do to them? As he is claiming he has evidence on governors, let him show to the world evidence of those at the federal level.

If he exits office, people will surely know he is not an honest person. I have evidence against him. Let him vacate office, I am telling you within 10 seconds probably more than 200 people will bring evidences of bribe he collected from them. He knows what he requested from me but I declined.

“He requested a bribe of $2 million from me and I have evidence of this. He knows the house we met, he invited me and told me the conditions. He told me governors were going to his office but I did not. If I don’t have evidence, I won’t say this,” Governor Matawalle stated.

ENUGU GOVERNOR ELECT, PETER MBAH CERTIFICATE NOT FROM US, HE KNOWS HIS CERTIFICATE IS FAKE – NYSC DIRECTOR-GENERAL

Brig Gen Yusha’u Ahmed, the Director General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), on Friday disclosed that the discharge certificate being paraded by the Enugu State Governor-elect, Barr Peter Mbah, was not issued by the corps.

The NYSC DG made this known while featuring as a guest on Arise Television’s breakfast programme, stressing that Mbah had told the PDP in the 2023 governorship elections that what he presented as a certificate was fake.

He said; “He came to me and I called my director to confirm the certificate and we discovered that the certificate was fake and I told him. I wonder how elites who have gone to school will resort to a black market certificate.

“I was so frank and clear to him that the certificate is not from us. I showed him some few examples just to help him. But he chose to go to court and even to sue whoever that he’s suing.

As far as I’m concerned, NYSC has not been sued. I’m yet to see anything from the court. All that people are saying is what I’m hearing. I’ve not received any court order. We don’t tolerate anything certificate racketeering,” he added

Mbah, in the writ of summons documents obtained by SaharaReporters on Thursday, had sought a declaration that he participated in the NYSC scheme for one calendar year vide a call-up letter number FRN/2001/800351; Lagos code LA/01/1532 and upon completion was issued a certificate of National Service No. A808297

MATAWALLE URGES EFCC TO PROBE PRESIDENCY OFFICIALS, MINISTERS

The Governor of Zamfara State, Bello Matawalle, has urged the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission not to limit its corruption probe to governors alone, but to extend it officials of the Presidency and the members of the Federal Executive Council.

The governor made the demand in a statement on Wednesday, in reaction to a report that quoted the EFCC Chairman, Abdulrasheed Bawa,as saying the anti-graft agency had sent invitations to all outgoing governors and commissioners for corruption probe.

Matawalle said while he had no problem with plan to probe outgoing governors, officials of the Presidency should also not be spared.

Matawalle said, “The investigation must be holistic and not selective. It is in this respect that the recent invitations and pronouncement by the EFCC chair is imbalance, incomplete, hypocritical and unnecessarily skewed.

“This is counter-productive to the anti-corruption crusade itself, that is if Mallam Bawa is actually committed to one.

I demand that the EFCC chair extend similar invitations to officers of the Presidency and members of the Federal Executive Council, which is the highest tier of government in the country.

“In furtherance of my desire to engender a broad-based investigation and an enlargement of the fight against corruption, I will also demand that Abdulrasheed Bawa excuse himself and surrender himself for investigation, as I and some eminent Nigerians have evidence of corrupt practices, breach of public trust and abuse of office against him and the commission led by him

Importantly, he needs to come clean with Nigerians on the way and manner he has prosecuted the anti-corruption fight. He needs to explain among others how seized assets by the EFCC are being sold without adherence to due process.

“He should explain, for instance, how he has assumed the role of the plaintiff, prosecutor and jury and how he has executed his brand of plea bargaining with suspected criminals and saboteurs of the Nigerian economy and agenda who instead of being put on trial, are walking freely all over Nigeria.”

The Director, Media and Publicity, EFCC, Wilson Uwujaren, did not respond to inquiries by our correspondent concerning the development and allegations as of press time, despite phone calls and text messages to his telephone line on Wednesday.

MOHAMMED KAMALDEEN UNIVERSITY, ONE ONLINE VARSITY, 36 OTHERS RECEIVE LICENSE

The Federal Government under President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration has approved 37 new private universities.

The approval was announced at an extraordinary Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting, presided over by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo at the Presidential Villa.

FEC entertained about 40 memoranda from various ministries, departments and agencies, including the approval for the establishment of 37 private universities.

According to the Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu, one of the institutions approved is an online university.

He said the newly approved universities have surged the number of private universities in the country to 72.

Although he did not disclose the names of the universities, he revealed that the online university would be the first of its kind in the country, and owned by a woman from Bauchi State.

The expectation is that it will cater for the likes of northern Muslim women who feel reluctant or restrained from attending physical campus education.

Asked by journalists if the additional universities are expedient given the funding challenges of existing ones, Adamu explained that these are all private, with enough funds to run them and they should not be denied the opportunity to exist.

Besides, he said Nigeria needs more universities as the available ones are not adequate to take up all those aspiring for higher education.

KWSG SEALS OFF CHINESE QUARRY SITE

The Kwara State Government today sealed off the China Kaidi Quarry site along Ilorin-Ogbomoso road, due to significant concerns over safety of Kwarans living in the area and environmental compliance.

The decision to seal off the quarry site follows the inspection carried out by the Kwara State Environmental Protection Agency (KWEPA) to the company, where numerous safety violations were discovered, including the absence of essential safety equipment for workers, inadequate training programmes, and insufficient measures to prevent accidents.

Besides, environmental concerns were equally raised, such as lack of proper reclamation procedures, and non-compliance with essential environmental permits and licenses.

The sealing off of the quarry site further underscores the state government's commitment to prioritize the well-being of kwarans and protect the environment from potential harm caused by mining activities.

Following an earlier inspection visit to the quarry site a fortnight ago, the state government expressed deep reservations about the adherence to safety protocols and environmental regulations.

The quarry site was believed to have posed a significant risk to the safety and health of the people living in the area and the workers, as well as potential harm to the surrounding ecosystem.

The site sealing off team, was led by the State Director of Environment, Mr. Abayomi Idowu, accompanied by other Senior Staff of the Kwara State Environmental Protection Agency and members of the Civil Defence Corps.

According to him, "the closure of the quarry site is a necessary step to protect the lives of people living in the area, the workers and the environment. We cannot compromise on safety and responsible mining practices", Idowu said.

NAHCON ALLAYS FEAR OF INCREASE IN HAJJ FARES

Less than three weeks to the commencement of the airlift of Nigerian intending pilgrims to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for this year’s Hajj, the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) on Saturday assured them that there will not be further changes in the fares paid.

NAHCON Chairman/Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Alhaji Zikrullah Kunle Hassan, gave the assurance at the opening of a one-day workshop organised by the commission in collaboration with the Saudi Ministry of Hajj and Umrah held at the conference hall of the Hajj House in Abuja.

The workshop, entitled: “Training and Capacity Building for pilgrims groups and Leaders in Hajj”, is part of the initiatives to train Nigerian Hajj managers on crowd control and management communication skills, information and awareness campaigns.

According to Hassan, despite the $250 increment imposed by the air carriers, NAHCON would not impose the extra cost on the pilgrims.

The increment, he informed, was due to the ongoing crisis in Sudan, leading to the closure of its airspace, adding that their consultations were ongoing to find a solution to this.

“It is true that the air carriers have increased the charges by $250 because of the closure of the Sudanese airspace. Though we are still consulting to find an avenue to address the increase.

BUHARI GRANTS EMEFIELE STUDY LEAVE

Godwin Emefiele, the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria has reportedly been granted study leave by President Muhammadu Buhari.

This opportunity for Emefiele to flee the country before Buhari leaves office on May 29, 2023, comes amid corruption and terrorism-financing allegations against him.

It would be recalled that the Department of State Services, which made futile attempts to arrest and detain Emefiele in the past over the damning allegations against him, is not happy about the prospect of seeing the CBN governor evade justice.

“The DSS has kicked against the study leave reportedly granted to Emefiele as it means he will flee the country before May 29 when another government comes in,” a source said on Friday.

Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress will be sworn in as Nigeria’s new president on May 29 barring any court judgement to the contrary as his election victory is being challenged at the election petition tribunal.

PAUL PARKER DARES TEN HAG TO DROP RASHFORD FROM MAN UTD

Former Manchester United defender, Paul Parker has told Erik ten Hag to drop Marcus Rashford from his starting lineup

He claimed that Rashford has been a constant feature because Ten Hag is afraid of a backlash from fans, insisting that the forward is not at his best and should be benched.

Rashford, who emerged one of the best performers for the Red Devils this season and made them feel less pain over the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo, has dropped form, scoring just twice in the last 10 games in all competitions.

And now, it has resulted in the Red Devils slipping up in the Top four race and Parker claimed that the manager is scared that the fans will turn on him if he drops Rashford as he did with Ronaldo.

The  club legend told BonusBetCodes, “Erik ten Hag can’t afford to sub him off, especially not if Man United are chasing a goal.

“He is worried that he will get a crazy bounce back from the fans if he takes him off. That’s why he also might think he needs to play him in the starting lineup.”

Parker said that fans should not expect any more goals from the England international, insisting the 24-year-old does not interact or integrate with the team.

Georgina, 29, had responded by denying a breakup with her partner of seven years, writing in a social media post, “The jealous makes up a rumour, the gossipy spread it and the idiot believes it.”

Cristiano, 38, also posted a romantic photo of him kissing the gorgeous brunette on his Instagram page as they shared a meal and drink, writing, “Cheers to love.”

Daily Mail reports on Thursday that Ronaldo’s mother, 68, refuted any suggestion that the footballer’s relationship with Georgina fell apart overnight by labelling the claims as “lies” when she attended a store opening in her native Madeira.

She said, “It’s all lies, Every couple quarrels, but what is written is a lie.”

Ronaldo and Rodriguez have been together since 2017 and are currently based in Saudi Arabia after the footballer joined Saudi top club, Al-Nassr.
