DSS ISSUED 48 HOURS ULTIMATUM TO ARREST ASARI DOKUBO

The Ohanaeze Youth Council (OYC) has asked the Department of State Services (DSS) to immediately arrest a former Niger Delta militant, Asari Dokubo, over his threat to the Igbo people.

Naija News reports that Dokubo was seen in a viral video flaunting guns and threatening the Igbo-speaking people in Nigeria, days after meeting President Bola Tinubu.

The former militant leader stated that if not for the intervention of the British, he would have been selling the Igbo people to slavery just like his father did many years ago.

Dokubo also claimed that the Igbo people were looking for who would deal with them, asking them to look around and see how they are being killed incessantly.

Speaking to newsmen in Abuja on Thursday, the National President of OYC, Comrade Igboayaka Igboayaka, gave the DSS 48 hours to arrest the former Niger Delta militant leader.

The OYC President said it is unfortunate that the secret police have not arrested Dokubo after the video of his threat to kill Igbo people went viral.

Igboayaka claimed that the effrontery of Dokubo to have threatened the Igbos while brandishing an Ak-47 rifle is clearly smacked of a strong secret approval of the President.

The statement reads; “Recall that in a recent video clip that has gone viral on social media, the notorious ex-militant, Asari Dokubo was seen threatening to kill, exterminate and murder all Igbos wherever they are found just a few days after being hosted, at Aso Rock villa, by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

“As we have waited patiently after 48 hours of Asari Dokubo’s threats to kill the Igbos with fierce ambition as displayed in the said viral video with AK-47 riffles, it is most unfortunate that the said Asari Dokubo is yet to be apprehended and/or prosecuted by the State Security Services (DSS).

“Without mincing words, Ndigbo are quite convinced that Asari Dokubo’s visit to Aso Rock villa is an orchestrated meeting to further the ugly marginalization of the Igbos and subsequently stamp them out of existence as well as ensuring that every “perceived political opponent” is eliminated,” Igboayaka revealed.

“It’s obvious that the effrontery and/or the boldness of Asari Dokubo to have threatened the Igbos while brandishing hard military wares and/or weaponry like Ak-47 rifle is clearly smacked of a strong secret approval of Mr. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

“The above is a vivid signpost to a secret agenda by Mr. President against the Igbo Christians through the clown called Asari Dokubo

NO PRESIDENTIAL APPROVAL FOR SALARY INCREASE FOR POLITICAL OFFICE HOLDERS AND JUDICIAL OFFICERS

We have followed with consternation the viral story of the purported 114% increase in the salary of the President, Vice President, elected Federal and State political office holders and judicial officers.

We state without any equivocation that President Bola Tinubu has not approved any salary increase, and no such proposal has been brought before him for consideration.

While we recognise that it is within the constitutional remit of Revenue Mobilisation, Allocation and Fiscal Commission to propose and fix salaries and allowances of political office holders and Judicial Officers, such can not come to effect until it has equally been considered and approved by the President.

It is important to note that RMAFC, through its Public Relations Manager, has responded to this fake story being circulated and has already set the record straight.

However, that this unfounded story gained prominence on social media and in a section of mainstream media, again, brings to the fore the danger fake news poses to the society and our national well-being. The misinformation was, obviously, contrived to create ill-will for the new administration, slow down the upward momentum and  massive goodwill the Tinubu-led administration is currently enjoying among Nigerians as a result of its fast paced, dynamic and progressive policies.

It is important to reiterate to  journalists, media managers, and members of the public that  stories on government activities and policy issues that do not emanate from approved official communication channels should be ignored.

Media practitioners are enjoined to, at all times, cross-check their stories to ensure accurate reportage, which is the hallmark of responsible journalism.

BREAKING NEWS: PRESIDENT TINUBU APPROVES REOPENING OF SEME BORDER FOR VEHICLE IMPORTATION

The Nigerian government has approved the reopening of the Seme border to allow importation of vehicles and other goods from neighbouring West African countries.

This was stated by Director of Road Transport in the Ministry of Transportation, Ibrahim Musa, on Wednesday at the Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS, meeting, organised between officials of Nigeria and Benin, Musa said the development followed complaints by freight forwarders operating at the Seme border

The former minister made us to prepare a memo to that effect. It was considered and sent to the government.”

Also speaking, the Customs Area Controller of Seme Border Command, Dera Nnadi said the service has noticed a reduction in its revenue since the importation of vehicles was banned from the land borders.

The former Minister of Transportation, responding to some of our requests and from the stakeholders, promised to take them to the Federal Executive Council, FEC, one of them is how to fully open this border.

“The Ministry has informed us that the memo has been written to FEC and it was adopted and that it would be given to the new government, he assured us that all the requests were adopted.”

Meanwhile, the Nigerian Customs Service, NCS Seme Area Command had lamented the huge impact of prolonged border closure on revenue generation at the Seme border.

Comptroller Dera Nnadi, Customs Area Controller Seme Command, mentioned the figures during a media briefing on the Command's First Quarter, Q1 performance and the handing over of fake $6 million to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, as well as the handing over of other seized items to partner government agencies at Seme, Badagry.

He said: “The major source of revenue of the Command (import/export) has not been enhanced since the opening of the land Borders as directed by the Federal Government of Nigeria as the traders are still bracing with the challenges of having been out of business for over two years

RMAFC DENIES SALARY INCREASE FOR TINUBU, GOVS, OTHERS

The Revenue Mobilisation, Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) has denied media report (not in LEADERSHIP) that it has approved the increment of salaries of political office-holders, judicial and public office holders by 114 per cent.

In an exclusive discussion with LEADERSHIP, RMAFC Public Relations Officer, Christian Nwachukwu, said President Bola Tinubu has not given approval for the increment of salaries of public servants.

Rakiya Tanko-Ayuba, a Federal Commissioner in the Commission, had made the salary increment remark when she represented RMAFC chairman, Mohammad Shehu, at the presentation of the reports of the reviewed remuneration package to Kebbi State Governor, Nasir Idris, in Birnin Kebbi, on Tuesday.

Tanko-Ayuba reportedly said that implementation of the reviewed remuneration packages was effective from January 1, 2023, a claim that has been strongly denied by the Commission’s spokesman.

“Not my chairman. Not my chairman. My chairman has never made any statement on it. And I have not made any statement on it. No statement from chairman, no statement from me. So, I don’t know. I heard one of the Commissioners said it. I don’t want to be quoted,” the RMAFC spokesperson told our Correspondent while denying the Commissioner’s assertion

“No approval yet. There is no approval yet. I don’t know the source of that story. Everything is under the process. It has to come as a Bill for Mr President to assent.

“The President has not given assent. Until the President gives assent, you cannot take it as if it has taken effect. You know that. You are a journalist.

“I don’t want to be quoted wrongly. The President has not given assent to it. It is still under the process,” Nwachukwu said over a phone chat with this writer.

Asked if the National Assembly has begun work on the proposal, he said: “it will be sent to National Assembly. Whichever way, whether it has been sent or not, the President has not assented to it. All those legislative process has to be completed; finally, it will land on Mr President’s table for assent. That has not been completed.”

When our correspondent asked if that means that the story making the rounds on salary increment was not true, Nwachukwu said: “just take it the way you understand it so that you don’t quote me anyhow.”

Asked whether the RMAFC has sent the executive bill through FEC to the National Assembly for deliberation, Nwachukwu simply said: “everything is under the process.”

SHETTIMA SEEKS STRONGER RELATIONS WITH UK, ADVOCATES CREATION OF BI-NATIONAL COMMISSION

Vice President Sen. Kashim Shettima has called for stronger relations between Nigeria and the United Kingdom (UK) given the long standing historical antecedents, business activities and shared interests between the two countries.

Vice President Shettima made the call today during a courtesy visit to his office by the British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Mr. Richard Montgomery at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

In his brief remarks, the Vice President commended the long standing assistance and support of the UK government to Nigeria and expressed hope for a more robust business relations.

According to him “I will urge you to facilitate the setting up of the Nigeria-UK Binational Commission; that Bi-national Commission can be the driver for accelerating enhance business relationship between our two countries.”

“We need to ramp up the trade between our two nations taking into cognizance our proximity. There is no nation that we are close to than the UK and our trade represent less than five per cent of the volume of our import and export.”

Speaking on the issue of the economy, the Vice President said “most definitely, we are going to create an enabling environment for businesses to flourish in this country.”

Sen. Shettima underscored the need for economic reforms in order to position the country’s economy for growth especially the removal of fuel subsidy, “this is just the beginning because it was fait accompli to withdraw the fuel subsidy. We either get rid of the fuel subsidy or the fuel subsidy get rid of the Nigerian nation.”

The Vice President observed that “in 2012, we spent $10bn on fuel subsidy alone.  Last month, we were purportedly consuming 67 million litres per day, but after the removal of the subsidy it drops to 41 million bpd, nearly 40% off.  So the whole subsidy regime was opaque, ridden with a lot of inconsistency.

Still on economic reforms, the Vice President noted that the previous multiple exchange rate regime with a lot of corruption brought about the proliferation of so many schemes. “So obviously we have no option but to collapse the exchange rate regimes into one. In the coming weeks and months, we are going to make more pronouncements on how to reposition the Nigerian economy and make it vibrant for business.”

Emphasizing the role of the private sector in driving economic growth, the Vice President citing the example of Lagos said “Lagos is booming fundamentally because of the private sector but not because of government; the government just created the avenue for businesses to thrive.”

On efforts to find a lasting solution to the security challenges in the country, Sen. Shettima stated that there is need for both kinetic and non-kinetic approaches towards addressing the problems.

“Unless we want to engage in an endless war of attrition, you have to find a kinetic and non-kinetic solutions to our problems.  Yes, we have to strengthen our security architecture, so that we can be a stronger bargaining position with the insurrectionist; Boko Haram terrorists and kidnappers.”
He added that as part of the efforts of the Tinubu administration towards addressing on-going security problems, the Vice President disclosed that government will soon roll out different socio-economic intervention programmes and initiatives in the North East and North West that will facilitate empowerment and social inclusion of the vulnerable groups in the regions.

“So, I can assure you that we will pursue both kinetic and non-kinetic solutions to our challenges,” he added.

In his remarks, the British High Commissioner, Mr. Richard Montgomery, commended the new administration’s proactive economic policies especially the reforms. He lauded the long standing relationship and cooperation with Nigeria especially in areas of trade and investment, security and defence, digital technology, education. He expressed the readiness of the UK government to partner closely with the Federal Government to achieve overall development of the country.

In the delegation of the British High Commissioner were the Deputy Development Director, Susan Mshana; Counsellor Lake Chad Basin, Alex Maclean; Political Counsellor, Jonathan Bacon and Senior Political Advisor, Damilola Oyedele.

SPEAKER, DEPUTY VISIT MRS TINUBU, PLEDGE TO WORK FOR NIGERIANS

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Dr Tajudeen Abbas; and the Deputy Speaker, Benjamin Kalu, have paid a ‘thank-you’ visit to Senator Oluremi Tinubu, wife of President Bola Tinubu, pledging that the 10th Assembly will work for all Nigerians.

Abbas, according to a statement issued on Sunday by the Special Adviser to the Speaker on Media and Publicity, Musa Krishi, said the overwhelming mandate given to him by members of the House would spur him to work with every member to achieve a Nigeria that every citizen desires.

In the statement titled ‘10th House’ll Work for All Nigerians – Speaker Abbas…Pledges Support for Gender-Based Legislation…as Speaker, Deputy Visit Tinubu’s Wife,’ he was quoted to have made the pledge over the weekend when he led a delegation of members to “thank the First Lady, Sen. Oluremi Tinubu, for the support given to them to emerge as the presiding officers of the 10th House.”

Abbas said they did not take the First Lady’s support for granted, which was why they resolved to visit and thank her, stating that the 10th House would give the Tinubu-led administration all the support to succeed.

The Speaker noted that the current administration would have a smooth sail as the President, the Vice-President, the First Lady, the Chief of Staff to the President, the Deputy Chief of Staff to the President, and the Secretary to the Government of the Federation were all members of the National Assembly, a development he said would make them relate with the parliament from the point of knowledge.

“This is the first time we are having this kind of arrangement in our history,” Abbas noted, adding that the 10th House will ensure that the government succeeds.

He said, “Today is a very historic day. We have come to thank you for your support. We were here before to seek your support and prayers. Here we are today; we have won. It was through your collective efforts—Mr. President, yourself, governors, and all the other stakeholders. We have emerged in an unprecedented manner—353 out of 359 voted for me. It has never happened in our history.

Our leadership is a leadership for all Nigerians. This is your leadership. We’ll collaborate and partner, particularly in one area that you requested last time, which is to carry the women along.”

Abbas also said the 10th House would ensure that gender-based bills passed by the 9th Assembly but not signed into law were reconsidered and passed by the 10th House.

Tinubu, in her remark, congratulated the Speaker and his deputy on their victory, saying with the calibre of leadership and membership of the 10th Assembly, Nigeria would be great again.

The First Lady said, “We didn’t come out to play. We came out to build and unite the old path that generations will take. Nigeria deserves all that we can put to keep it back on its feet. We have a great Nation. Your victory…it is God that did it because without God, even if we put all our strength, it won’t happen. By the grace of God, we will work.”

Tinubu called on other political parties to join hands and work for Nigeria.

Earlier, Kalu said the visit was to thank the First Lady and assure the first family of their readiness to work with the Executive for the growth and development of Nigeria

The Deputy Speaker also said the President and his wife inspired and encouraged them before, during and after the contest for House leadership, noting that Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress made the right choice by endorsing the current leadership of the National Assembly.

Kalu said, “We want to pledge again. We won’t fail you. What happened means stability had been given to this government. He has encouraged people who believe in his mission and vision.”

Chairman of the Joint Task – 10th Assembly, Usman Kumo, whose forum led the Abbas/Kalu campaign, said as responsible and respectful individuals, they deemed it fit to visit the First Lady and thank her for the role she played in the emergence of the two presiding officers.

Kumo said, “We are here to say thank you to you for being supportive of your husband. Your Excellency, you are unique. The country is lucky to have you as the mother of the nation. You’re coming from the point of knowledge because you were with him when he was governor, you were in the National Assembly, and now you’re the mother of the nation

“You have given us a lot of support for Tajudeen and Kalu to emerge. We also want you to thank our father, the father of the nation, for what he did to us. We want to reiterate our unflinching loyalty to the President and the country. We know you’d advise him from the point of knowledge to make the country better.”

IMF HAILS TINUBU AS NAIRA RECORDS FIRST CLOSING GAIN

The naira yesterday recorded its first closing gain of N39/$1 at the Investors and Exporters (I&E) window following  the Central Bank’s (CBN’s) unification of  exchange rates into the I&E window.

The naira, which closed at N702/$1 on Thursday came back strong yesterday, closing at N663/$1, a N39/$1 appreciation, according to data from FMDQ Group.

It was the first closing gain for the naira  since the rate unification policy took off on Wednesday.

The policy, which allows forex dealers and investors to buy and sell dollars at exchange rate of their choice provided they can find buyers, had pushed the local currency to over 15 years low before the ongoing recovery

The new policy is part of the bold reforms promised by President Bola Tinubu.

Ranging from subsidy removal to some “housecleaning” at critical institutions to exchange rate unification, the market has responded positively.

The Nigerian equities market has outperformed its peers, gaining 13 per cent in the past two weeks

A major support for the unified exchange rate policy came from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) on Friday, which gave its backing to the exchange rate unification policy of the apex bank.

JUST IN: MILITARY RESPONSIBLE FOR OIL THEFT IN NIGERIA – ASARI DOKUBO

Prominent Niger Delta leader and former agitator, Mujahid Asari Dokubo, on Friday, in Abuja, alleged that the bulk cases of oil theft recorded in the oil-rich region are traceable to the Nigerian Army and Navy.

The military is at the centre of oil theft and we have to make this very clear to the Nigerian public that 99 per cent of oil theft can be traced to the Nigerian military, the Army and the Navy especially,” Dokubo told State House correspondents after he met President Bola Tinubu behind closed doors at the Aso Rock Villa, Abuja.

However, he pledged his support to the Federal Government to bring oil theft to “zero,” believing that the Tinubu-led administration would “fish out” the culpable elements in the military.

In April, the Nigerian Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative revealed that Nigeria lost 619.7 million barrels of crude oil valued at N16.25tn to crude oil theft between 2009 and 2020.

The data gathered from the agency’s latest policy brief titled, “The cost of fuel subsidy: A case for policy review,” also stated that the country spent over N13tn ($74 billion) on fuel subsidies between 2005 and 2021.

Speaking on Friday, Dokubo said oil theft and security framed his nearly two-hour discussion with the President.

On security, he faulted the narrative that the military was underequipped to take on terrorism, banditry and militancy head-on, describing it as “blackmail.”

For Dokubo, “The blackmail of the Nigerian state by the Nigerian military is shameful. They said they do not have enough armament and people listen to these false narratives. So this blackmail must end. They have enough resources to fight.”

He argued that the release of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, would not ease the tensions in the South-East. Rather, it would fuel impunity.

“Releasing Nnamdi Kanu is rewarding criminality and rewarding gruesome murder of innocent people. He should face the law for the actions and instigations he has carried out.”

Friday’s meeting is part of the President’s ongoing consultations with opinion leaders from the Niger Delta region.

Last week, the President also met other key figures from the region, including former Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission, Timi Alaibe and former Director-General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, Dr Dakuku Peterside.

During his first meeting with Security Chiefs on June 1, the President directed the military and other security agencies to crush oil theft

The president disclosed this in a meeting with traditional leaders on Friday.

According to Abiodun Oladunjoye, Director of Information to the President, Tinubu, speaking at an interactive session with the royal fathers under the aegis of the National Council of Traditional Rulers of Nigeria (NCTRN), told them about the decision of his government to remove fuel subsidy, improve security, create jobs, and sustain the environment, as well as the forthcoming election of principal officers of the 10th National Assembly.

Reacting to the traditional rulers on the current challenges confronting the country, the President assured them, saying, “worry not because the country is in good hands.”

President Tinubu appealed to the traditional leaders to talk to Nigerians to have faith that fuel pump prices will eventually come down.

The elephant that was going to bring Nigeria to its knees is the subsidy. A country that cannot pay salaries, and we say we have the potential to encourage ourselves. I think we did the right thing,” he said.

While acknowledging concerns about the need for critical infrastructure in different parts of the country, President Tinubu pledged that any roadblock in the way of the progress of the Nigerian people would be removed by his government.

“The lamentations about the capital projects—where will the money come from if we don’t protect our resources and boundaries? You cannot have development without capital projects,” he added.

The lamentations about the capital projects—where will the money come from if we don’t protect our resources and boundaries? You cannot have development without capital projects,” he added.

On the leadership of the National Assembly, the President urged the royal fathers to counsel their subjects interested in elective positions on the need to manage their ambitions and create harmony within the legislative house.

President Tinubu declared that he is ready to work with any elected representative from the National Assembly, stressing that the Nigeria project is paramount to him..

On security, the President reiterated his pledge to Nigerians to prioritise the sector until every Nigerian “goes to sleep with their two eyes closed.”

He emphasised that the unity and togetherness of the country cannot be compromised, saying that every region of the country would get what it is due.

“We are going to tackle youth unemployment. Only when we have prosperity for the country can we create jobs to employ our youths,” he said.

Condemning crude oil theft in the Niger Delta region by a ‘tiny percentage’ of the population, President Tinubu said it was counterproductive to the economy’s growth.

“We need to tame those involved in this sabotage, and we will work as hard as possible to ensure that the diversity of this country is used for its prosperity, growth and stability.”

“That’s devolution of power, and that should be our contribution to the developmental projects you are looking for, and we will continue in ways that will help our people,” he said.

In separate remarks, the Chairman and Co-Chairman of NCTRN, the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Saad Abubakar, and Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, pledged the support and loyalty of traditional rulers from the six geo-political zones to President Tinubu.

They assured the President of their continued prayers for his resolve to move the country forward under his Renewed Hope agenda.

“We are 100 per cent in support of your government, and we believe in the will of the Almighty Allah that you will move this country forward,” the Sultan said while congratulating him and Vice President Kashim Shettima on their election victory, peaceful transition, and assumption of office.
